As Human Metapneumovirus cases rise, Maharashtra's Health Department has issued an advisory to enhance public awareness and safety. Preventive measures such as hygiene practices are recommended to curb the virus's spread, particularly among vulnerable populations during colder seasons.
With the number of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases on the rise in China, Maharashtra's Health Department is taking preventive steps by issuing an advisory to inform the public about this respiratory virus.
This move comes as the Union Health Ministry stays in close watch over the situation, ensuring ongoing dialogue with the World Health Organization (WHO) to safeguard against potential outbreaks.

HMPV, known for symptoms akin to those of the common cold, can significantly impact young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems, pushing them towards severe health complications. The colder seasons particularly exacerbate these risks, making it a critical period for heightened awareness and vigilance.
"Human Metapneumovirus is not new to India, but testing is rare due to its high cost, which ranges between ₹15,000 and ₹20,000," explained Dr. Lancelot Pinto, a pulmonologist at PD Hinduja Hospital. He underlined the necessity of being informed and the timely detection of the virus to manage it efficiently.
To deter the spread of HMPV, which transmits through respiratory droplets, health officials emphasize the importance of basic hygiene. Recommendations include covering one's mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing, rigorous handwashing with soap, and steering clear of crowded areas if exhibiting symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.
The state's health department reassures the public that healthcare facilities are well-equipped to deal with HMPV cases. They urge anyone experiencing aggravating symptoms to seek immediate medical attention. Even though India has not faced any significant outbreaks, the authorities are on high alert, advising the community to remain updated on HMPV and adhere to preventive measures to avoid its spread.
