The Indian government has unveiled an ambitious India AI Mission, allocating a substantial budget of Rs 10,372 crore over five years. This mission aims to foster the growth of artificial intelligence in the country by establishing a robust AI ecosystem through public-private partnerships. The initiative will provide access to supercomputing resources, including over 10,000 GPUs, to startups, academia, and industry players, enabling them to harness the power of AI for various applications.
In a significant move to bolster artificial intelligence (AI) development in the country, the Indian government has approved the India AI Mission with a substantial outlay of Rs 10,372 crore for the next five years. This ambitious initiative aims to foster an AI ecosystem that will drive innovation, research, and entrepreneurship in the field of AI.

Building a Scalable AI Ecosystem
The approved funds will be utilized to establish a high-end, scalable AI ecosystem in collaboration with both public and private sectors. This ecosystem will provide the necessary infrastructure, resources, and support to startups, academia, researchers, and industry players to develop and deploy AI solutions.
Supercomputing Infrastructure and GPU Access
To facilitate AI development, the government will provide access to supercomputing capacity comprising over 10,000 GPUs. This high-performance computing infrastructure will enable stakeholders to process data at higher speeds and create innovative AI applications.
India AI Innovation Centre (IAIC)
The mission will establish an India AI Innovation Centre (IAIC) to serve as a leading academic institution dedicated to AI research and development. The IAIC will spearhead the development of foundational models, including indigenous Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) and domain-specific models, leveraging edge and distributed computing for optimal efficiency.
Financial Support for AI Startups
Recognizing the importance of nurturing AI startups, the mission includes a financial outlay to fortify the India AI Startup Financing mechanism. This mechanism will provide streamlined access to funding for budding AI startups, supporting their journey from product development to commercialization.
National Data Management Office
To ensure the availability of high-quality data for AI development and deployment, the mission will establish a National Data Management Office. This office will coordinate with various government departments and ministries to improve data quality and accessibility.
Three-Tier Compute Infrastructure
Based on recommendations from government-formed working groups on AI, the mission will establish a three-tier compute infrastructure comprising 24,500 GPUs. This infrastructure will provide the necessary computing power for AI development and deployment.
Global AI Landscape and Investments
The article highlights the global landscape of AI development, with the US and China leading in computing infrastructure for AI technology. It also mentions significant investments made by tech giants like Microsoft and IBM in AI research and development.
The India AI Mission represents a transformative initiative by the Indian government to position the country as a global leader in AI innovation. By providing a robust ecosystem, supercomputing infrastructure, financial support, and a focus on data management, the mission aims to empower startups, researchers, and industry players to harness the potential of AI for the benefit of society and the economy.
