Indias thriving auto industry has become a focal point for countries negotiating free trade agreements, with the UK seeking significant concessions in the EV segment.
India has emerged as a prominent player in the global automobile industry, attracting the attention of countries negotiating free trade agreements (FTAs) with the nation. Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal highlighted the growing interest in India's fast-growing automobile sector, particularly in the context of ongoing FTA discussions with countries like the United Kingdom (UK).

India's Strength in the Auto Industry
Barthwal emphasized India's comprehensive strength in the auto manufacturing sector, encompassing not only vehicle assembly but also the entire value chain. The industry has made significant strides in various areas, including the production of auto-grade steel, components, and tires, and has successfully exported these goods to international markets.
Shift Towards Electric Vehicles
Recognizing the global transition towards sustainable mobility, Barthwal noted the auto sector's shift from conventional internal combustion engines (ICE) to electric vehicle (EV) battery-based systems. He expressed optimism about India's potential in this evolving landscape, stating, "When we look at our present strength and the future potential in India, I think it is going to be huge."
FTA Negotiations and Market Share
Barthwal revealed that countries engaged in FTA negotiations with India have expressed their desire to secure a greater share of the Indian automobile market. The UK, in particular, is seeking duty concessions in the auto sector, especially in the EV segment. These discussions are currently in their final stages.
Diversification and Value Chains
The Commerce Secretary emphasized the importance of diversifying value chains and reducing reliance on a single source. He highlighted the significance of the upcoming three-day Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024 in facilitating this diversification.
Export Targets for the Auto Sector
Speaking at the event, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal set an ambitious target for the auto industry, urging manufacturers to aim for exporting at least 50% of vehicles produced in India. He acknowledged the current export rate of 14% and the industry's aspiration to reach 25%, but stressed the need to push for a 50% export share.
India's Advantages in the Global Market
Goyal highlighted India's competitive advantages in the global auto sector, including its large domestic market, skilled labor force, technological expertise, and managerial talent. He asserted that these factors provide a strong foundation for India to capture a significant share of global auto exports.
Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024
The curtain raiser event for the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024 was held in New Delhi, with Goyal and Barthwal addressing the gathering. The expo, scheduled to take place from February 1 at Bharat Mandapam, aims to showcase India's strengths in the mobility sector and position the country as a global player across industries.
Expo Highlights and International Participation
The expo will feature over 600 exhibitors from 50 countries, showcasing cutting-edge technologies and innovations in mobility. Specialized exhibitions will include an auto show featuring electric and hybrid vehicles, ACMA Automechanika, a large-scale tire exhibition, urban mobility solutions, drones, EV infrastructure, and alternative energy sources like hydrogen in the mobility landscape.
More than 27 leading vehicle manufacturers are expected to unveil new models and EVs, while automotive players from both international and domestic markets will display their electric, hybrid, CNG, and biofuel-powered vehicles. The event will also host over 400 auto component manufacturers and more than 1,000 brands from over 13 global markets, showcasing a wide range of products, technologies, and services.
Dedicated country pavilions will be set up for Japan, Germany, Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand, with additional international participation from countries such as the US, Spain, the UAE, Russia, Italy, Turkiye, Singapore, and Belgium. Major international and Indian battery manufacturers, battery supply chain companies, and recycling companies will also participate in the event.
CEO Conclave and NASSCOM's Role
The expo will feature a CEO Conclave, where industry leaders will gather to discuss the future trajectory of the mobility industry. Additionally, NASSCOM will showcase India's capabilities in automotive software, advanced technology, and innovation.
India's growing prominence in the global automobile sector has attracted the attention of countries negotiating FTAs with the nation. The ongoing discussions highlight the potential for increased market access and collaboration in the auto industry. With its strong domestic market, skilled workforce, and technological expertise, India is well-positioned to capture a significant share of global auto exports. The Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024 serves as a platform to showcase India's strengths and foster international partnerships in the mobility sector.
