Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors praised the PM e-drive scheme, stating it would boost electric vehicle (EV) adoption in India. On September 11, the Union Cabinet approved two significant schemes with a combined budget of Rs 14,335 crore to promote EVs, including buses, ambulances, and trucks.

Support for Electric Vehicles
The PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme has an outlay of Rs 10,900 crore over two years. Additionally, the PM-eBus Sewa-Payment Security Mechanism (PSM) scheme has a budget of Rs 3,435 crore. Mahindra Group CEO Anish Shah stated that the scheme's focus on two-wheelers, three-wheelers, e-buses, and e-ambulances would drive higher EV penetration in India.
Shah also mentioned that investments in fast charging infrastructure for all segments would increase consumer confidence and accelerate EV adoption. He noted that FAME and EMPS have already contributed to 20% penetration of electric three-wheelers in the country. "With PM e-drive, we foresee India becoming the first country to achieve 100 per cent electrification in this segment by 2030," he added.
Industry Reactions
Tata Motors Executive Director Girish Wagh said the scheme would speed up India's journey towards zero-emission mobility, especially in trucks, buses, and ambulances. "We continue to collaborate with the Government and other stakeholders in this nation-building endeavour towards sustainable transportation," he added.
Ola founder Bhavish Aggarwal tweeted that the scheme is a strong push to boost EV adoption. "The PM E-Drive scheme is a welcome move and a great step to accelerate EV adoption in India. The scheme will provide the required impetus to the EV industry to scale and mature rapidly, ensuring a swift transition from ICE to EVs," he said.
Impact on Employment and Investment
Hero MotoCorp Executive Chairman Pawan Munjal expressed full support for the PM E-Drive scheme. He stated that addressing the entire e-mobility ecosystem would revolutionise electric mobility by driving technological advancements, attracting investment, and creating new employment opportunities.
Wardwizard Innovations & Mobility Chairman Yatin Gupte called it a progressive step towards self-reliance and a greener future. Switch Mobility CEO Mahesh Babu highlighted that the scheme would benefit 24 lakh vehicles, including 38,000 electric buses. "With about 2,000 orders in hand for SWITCH, we foresee a 45-70 per cent CAGR growth over the next 10 years, depending on government schemes like the PM E-Drive," he added.
Subsidies and Incentives
The scheme includes subsidies worth Rs 3,679 crore for electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws), three-wheelers (e-3Ws), ambulances, trucks, and other emerging EVs. It aims to support 24.79 lakh e-2Ws, 3.16 lakh e-3Ws, and 14,028 e-buses.
Earlier government initiatives like FAME phases one and two supported around 16 lakh electric vehicles. JK Tyre & Industries MD Anshuman Singhania said the new subsidy marks another pivotal step in strengthening the EV ecosystem and reflects the government's commitment to supporting both consumers and industries.
Charging Infrastructure
VECV MD & CEO Vinod Aggarwal mentioned that the scheme would incentivise customers to adopt environment-friendly electric vehicles across various segments. He also noted that it addresses charging infrastructure by supporting 88,500 electric vehicle chargers nationwide.
Simple Energy Founder Suhas Rajkumar acknowledged that electric mobility is spreading faster in personal and last-mile mobility segments through large uptake of e-2Ws, e-3Ws, and e-buses. "By targeting these very segments, the PM E-DRIVE scheme will ensure that accessibility to electric mobility improves for the masses," he added.
The PM E-DRIVE initiative marks a significant step towards reducing reliance on fossil fuels while lowering carbon emissions and curbing urban pollution. This comprehensive approach aims to transform India's transportation landscape into a more sustainable one.
