India's long wait for a modern transport system is coming to end on August 15, 2027, as the country will give green signal to its first bullet train on that day. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that passengers will be able to buy tickets for the high-speed train on Independence Day, making the occasion symbolic of progress and national pride.

Route Between Mumbai and Ahmedabad
The train will run on a 508-kilometre corridor connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad. This project is designed to reduce travel time significantly and bring international standards of comfort to Indian railways.
The first stretch to be launched will be between Surat and Bilimora. After that, the section from Vapi to Surat will begin operations. The third stage will connect Vapi to Ahmedabad. Later, the train will run from Thane to Ahmedabad. Finally, the complete line from Mumbai to Ahmedabad will be opened. This step-by-step rollout is meant to ensure smooth functioning and allow passengers to experience the service as the construction progresses.
Cities Along the Corridor
The bullet train will connect many cities and towns including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Vapi, Thane, and Mumbai, known for their impact in the country's business and industry spheres and the new train is expected to strengthen economic cooperation by making travel faster and more reliable.
The minister pointed out that the success of the Vande Bharat Express has given people confidence in India's ability to run advanced trains. He also mentioned that sleeper versions of the Vande Bharat are being planned, which will allow passengers to travel comfortably overnight. Requests for these sleeper trains have already come from Members of Parliament across the country.
Construction Progresses
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor covers 352 kilometres in Gujarat and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and 156 kilometres in Maharashtra. A large part of the track-about 85 percent, or 465 kilometres-is being built on elevated viaducts. These are long bridge-like structures that raise the railway above the ground, roads, and rivers to ensure safety and speed.
Out of the total, 326 kilometres of elevated structures have already been completed. Seventeen of the twenty-five river bridges along the route are finished. The 47-kilometre stretch between Surat and Bilimora is among the most advanced sections, with civil construction and track-bed preparation already done.
Surat Station: A Modern Landmark
One of the highlights of the project is the new station at Surat. The design of the building takes inspiration from the city's famous diamond industry. The station rises to a height of 26.3 metres and has a built-up area of 58,352 square metres.
It has three levels. The ground floor will be used for parking and security checks. The middle level, called the concourse, will have lounges, restrooms, kiosks, and ticket counters. The top level will be the platform where passengers board the train.
While the main structure of the station is complete, finishing work such as interiors and passenger amenities is still in progress. Track-related work, including the construction of reinforced concrete beds and temporary tracks, has also been completed at the site.
A New Era
The bullet train project is expected to transform the way people travel between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. By reducing journey times and offering world-class facilities, it will set new standards for rail travel in India. The choice of Independence Day for the launch underlines the importance of the project as a symbol of national advancement.
