Indian Airlines Successfully Upgrade Software for 80% of A320 Family Aircraft to Address Flight Control Issues

IndiGo, Air India, and Air India Express have initiated software upgrades on their A320 family aircraft to address a potential flight control issue. This process has led to some delays and cancellations. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), 80% of the affected 338 aircraft have been modified. IndiGo and Air India did not cancel any flights, while Air India Express cancelled four due to this modification.

Flight delays ranged from 60 to 90 minutes at various airports. Airbus had previously warned that intense solar radiation might corrupt critical flight control data in many A320 family aircraft. This necessitated software changes, which caused operational disruptions. The DGCA reported that modifications have been completed for 270 out of the 338 affected aircraft.

Software Upgrades and Impact

IndiGo has completed software upgrades on 184 of its 200 affected planes. Air India has upgraded 69 out of its 113 impacted aircraft. For Air India Express, upgrades have been done on 17 of its 25 planes. The software updates are being conducted at airline bases in major cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata.

The DGCA issued an Airworthiness Directive urging immediate software upgrades following Airbus's global alert and the European Aviation Safety Authority's (EASA) Emergency Airworthiness Directive. EASA advised installing a serviceable Elevator Aileron Computer (ELAC) in the affected aircraft to ensure flight control safety.

Operational Adjustments

IndiGo operates over 2,300 flights daily and reported no cancellations due to these checks but acknowledged minor delays. Air India also stated that while there were no cancellations, some flights might experience slight delays or rescheduling. Globally, most of the nearly 6,000 affected aircraft require software updates, with some needing hardware adjustments.

There are over 8,100 A320 family planes worldwide, including A319s, A320 ceos and neos, and A321 ceos and neos. Former pilot Ehsan Khalid explained that ELACs are crucial for flight control. He highlighted a recent incident where a JetBlue aircraft experienced an uncommanded pitch down for seven seconds due to ELAC issues.

Khalid noted that at high altitudes, such incidents are less critical but could be catastrophic during take-off or landing. He referenced the Ahmedabad crash as an example where such a malfunction could have dire consequences. Airbus has acknowledged the software issue and committed to resolving it promptly.

IndiGo confirmed that by noon IST, they had completed necessary actions on 160 aircraft. Inspections on remaining planes are progressing well within the timeline set by EASA. Air India also reported completing resets on over 40% of its impacted fleet and aims to cover all within the prescribed timeframe.
