The Indian automobile industry witnessed impressive growth across various segments in November 2022. Passenger vehicle wholesales, two-wheeler sales, and three-wheeler dispatches all saw significant increases compared to the previous year.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) reported a significant increase in domestic passenger vehicle wholesales for the month of November. Driven by strong demand, especially for utility vehicles, the industry witnessed a positive growth trajectory.
Robust Growth Across Segments
Overall passenger vehicle dispatches from companies to dealers reached 3,34,130 units in November, marking a 4% year-over-year growth despite a high base in November 2022. Market leader Maruti Suzuki India contributed significantly to this growth, dispatching 1,34,158 passenger vehicles, a slight increase compared to the previous year.
Hyundai Motor India also experienced growth, dispatching 49,451 units to its dealers, surpassing the 48,002 units dispatched in November 2022.
Two-Wheeler and Three-Wheeler Sales Surge
The two-wheeler segment witnessed an impressive 31% growth, with sales rising to 16,23,399 units in November compared to 12,36,282 units in the same period last year. Similarly, three-wheeler dispatches increased by 31%, reaching 59,738 units compared to 45,664 units in November 2022.
Industry Optimism and Future Outlook
Vinod Aggarwal, President of SIAM, attributed the robust growth to the festive season and expressed optimism about the industry's performance for the remainder of 2023 and into 2024, supported by strong economic growth.
Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM, highlighted the record-breaking wholesales in the passenger vehicle segment, despite a high base in November 2022. He also noted that three-wheeler and two-wheeler wholesales were slightly below their respective peaks in previous years.
Strong Retail Sales Performance
Automobile retail sales mirrored the positive trend, recording the best-ever performance in November. Overall retail sales increased by 26% to 23,80,465 units compared to 18,93,647 units in November 2021.
Passenger vehicle retail sales grew by 21% year-over-year, surpassing the three lakh unit mark in November. This growth was attributed to improved model availability, new launches, and increased demand in rural areas.
Two-wheeler retail sales also experienced a 24% increase, reaching 18,47,708 units compared to 14,94,797 units in November 2021.
The Indian automobile industry is experiencing a positive growth trajectory, driven by robust demand across segments. With strong economic indicators and a supportive business environment, the industry remains optimistic about sustaining this momentum in the coming months.
