Indian Engineering Firm and Atlas Elektronik Partner for Navy Sonar Project

In a significant development for India's defence sector, an Indian engineering company has joined forces with Atlas Elektronik GmbH, a subsidiary of the German defence conglomerate Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, to supply the Indian Navy with 12 state-of-the-art low-frequency variable depth sonar systems. This collaboration marks a notable step towards enhancing the anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities of the Indian Navy, utilizing indigenous resources and technology.

Indo-German Navy Sonar Collaboration

The sonar systems, designed for deployment on ASW vessels, will be provided to two major Indian shipyards: Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd based in Kolkata and Cochin Shipyard Limited located in Kochi. This initiative is part of an indigenous project aimed at bolstering the naval force's operational effectiveness against underwater threats.

Atlas Elektronik GmbH, renowned for its expertise in underwater acoustics and a leading technology provider in various sectors, has partnered with CFF Fluid Control Ltd for this venture. The collaboration is expected to leverage the proven technology of Active Towed Array Sonars previously supplied by Atlas Elektronik to the Indian Navy, ensuring an advancement in the navy's front-line platforms' operational capabilities.

The production of these sonar systems will take place in India, courtesy of CFF Fluid Control Ltd. This move aligns with the Indian government's ambitious goal of achieving self-reliance in defence manufacturing. CFF Fluid Control Ltd is well-versed in the manufacture, overhaul, repairs, and maintenance of a wide array of mechanical and electronic equipment. Their expertise spans navigation, communication, and weapon systems, along with reference systems and test facilities for both pneumatic and hydraulic electrical electronic systems for Indian naval submarines and surface ships.

This partnership not only signifies a leap towards self-sufficiency in defence technology but also strengthens the strategic ties between India and Germany in the defence sector. By incorporating indigenous technology that has already proven its mettle in Indian waters, this initiative promises to significantly enhance the Indian Navy's capability to detect and counteract submarine threats, thereby securing maritime borders more effectively.
