Indian Railways is set to overhaul its ticket cancellation and refund system, introducing stricter timelines and revised deduction slabs to curb misuse. The new rules will be rolled out in phases between April 1 and April 15, 2026. Officials state the changes aim to reduce ticket hoarding, tout activity and speculative bookings.
Railway Ticket Cancellation and Refund Rules: Key New Railway Changes From April 2026
Under the revised framework, passengers will now need to plan cancellations much earlier to receive higher refunds. The updated policy shifts key refund windows further away from the train's departure time and increases penalties for last-minute cancellations.

Train Ticket Cancellation Refund Rules
Cancel Train Ticket 72 Hours Before Departure
Passengers will be eligible for the highest refund-after deduction of a flat cancellation fee-only if the ticket is cancelled more than 72 hours before departure.
Earlier, this benefit was available for cancellations made more than 48 hours before the journey. This effectively reduces the flexibility passengers previously had for last-minute changes while still receiving a near-full refund.
25% Deduction Slab Gets New Time Band
Indian Railways has also revised the slab where 25% of the ticket fare is deducted. Under the new rules, cancellations made between 72 hours and 24 hours before departure will attract a 25% deduction.
Previously, this slab applied to cancellations done between 48 hours and 12 hours before departure. The shift means passengers will now face deductions earlier than before if they delay cancellation.
50% Deduction in Refunds If You Cancel Train Tickets Between 24 and 8 Hours
The 50% deduction bracket has also been moved to an earlier time band. Under the revised system, passengers cancelling tickets between 24 hours and 8 hours before departure will lose half of the ticket fare.
Currently, this deduction applies only if tickets are cancelled between 12 hours and 4 hours before departure. With the new rules, the penalty window starts sooner and lasts longer.
No-Refund on Train Tickets Cancellations
The strictest change comes in the no-refund window. Under the updated rules, no refund will be given if a ticket is cancelled less than 8 hours before the train's departure.
At present, passengers lose the entire fare if they cancel within 4 hours of departure or after chart preparation. By doubling this window, Indian Railways is significantly tightening last-minute refund eligibility.
Old vs New Rules of Train Tickets Cancellations
Maximum refund: Earlier more than 48 hours; Now more than 72 hours before departure
25% deduction: Earlier 48-12 hours; Now 72-24 hours
50% deduction: Earlier 12-4 hours; Now 24-8 hours
No refund: Earlier less than 4 hours; Now less than 8 hours
What It Means for Railway Passengers
The revised cancellation policy makes it clear that delaying ticket cancellations will now come at a higher cost. Passengers who cancel closer to departure will face steeper deductions or may lose their entire fare.
Officials believe the new structure will discourage misuse of the booking system and ensure better seat availability for genuine travellers. With the rollout happening between April 1 and April 15, 2026, passengers are advised to familiarise themselves with the updated timelines to avoid unnecessary losses.
