IndiGo Flight Cancellations: IndiGo's sudden cancellation of multiple flights has triggered chaos across major airports, including Bengaluru, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and several other cities. Nearly 200 flights had been cancelled by Wednesday, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and travel schedules severely disrupted, reported Reuters.
With airport congestion and flight delays stretching into the third consecutive day, many travellers are wondering whether travel insurance can soften the impact of such disruptions. Let's break down how travel insurance works and how effective it really is.

IndiGo Flight Disruptions
At least 175 IndiGo flights were cancelled as of early Thursday, leaving passengers at major airports angy and upset. The massive chaos began when the airline company failed to make timely roster adjustments and plan its schedule properly as per the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) guidelines, reported Reuters citing the Federation of Indian Pilots. The new DGCA rules were set to come into effect from December 1. The airline has acknowledged that stricter flight duty time limits have been a factor in the cancellations, added the news agency in its report.
What is Travel Insurance? How It Works?
Travel insurance is a policy that protects policyholders from financial loss due to unexpected changes in plans and trips including medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost luggage, and even travel delays. A travel insurance plan for a five day trip can be as low as Rs 400 per person. However, the insurance's single time premium amount may vary based on multiple factors like trip destination, age of the customer, pre-existing conditions, etc. It also depends on the facilities and features included in the insurance.
Can Travel Insurance Help During Flight Cancellations And Delays?
Travel insurance plans are helpful in cases where the policyholder is stranded for a specified number of hours during the trip.
"The recent spike in flight cancellation complaints, especially with large carriers like IndiGo, shows how unpredictable air travel can be for passengers. In such moments, travel Insurance offers fixed pay outs if the traveller is stranded for a specified number of hours (6-12 hours)," said Meet Kapadia, Head of Travel Insurance at Policybazaar.com.
The plan also offers reimbursement if the flight is cancelled and traveller has to book a new flight, arrange a hotel stay, cover meals, essentials, and make other emergency purchases.
"They also reimburse the cost if the flight is cancelled and traveller has to book a new flight, or arrange hotel stay, cover meals, essentials, and other emergency purchases. Beyond the financial safety net , the insurer also provides 24x7 assistance and emergency support to help passengers manage disruption with less stress in unfamiliar locations. For a small and very affordable premium, travel insurance provides essential protection when travel plans fall apart without warning," Kapadia added.
Travel Insurance: How Effective It Really Is In Case of Flight Disruptions?
While travel insurance plans cover financial loss due to flight cancellations, delays and disruptions, policyholders must always cross check on the policy's clauses, terms and conditions.
Delay benefits usually activate only when a flight leaves after a specified threshold, often six or eight hours, and the traveller continues on the same service. If passengers rebook independently, or refuse the airline's rescheduled option, insurers often treat this as a voluntary choice, making the situation ineligible for claim, reported Economic Times.
People must also be careful about ensuring proper documents in cases of flight delays, properl read policy exclusions and fully understand policy wordings to get the maximum benefit of travel insurance policies.
