IndiGo has settled a reduced fine of Rs 70 lakh imposed by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) for an incident involving passengers eating on the Mumbai airport tarmac in January. Initially, BCAS had fined the airline Rs 1.2 crore on January 18 for the event that occurred on January 14.

In a filing to the BSE on Tuesday, IndiGo stated that following an appeal, BCAS lowered the penalty to Rs 70 lakh through an order dated August 12. The airline mentioned there was a delay in disclosing this information within the prescribed timelines as it was reviewing legal options against the order.
Incident Details and Penalty Reduction
On January 14, passengers from an IndiGo flight, diverted from Goa to Delhi due to fog at Delhi airport, rushed out and sat on the tarmac at Mumbai airport. Some passengers were also seen eating there. This incident prompted BCAS to issue a show cause notice and subsequently impose a hefty fine.
IndiGo's filing revealed that after reviewing available legal remedies, the company paid the revised penalty amount to BCAS on September 10, 2024. The delay in submission of disclosure was attributed to this review process.
The airline's appeal led to BCAS reducing the original penalty from Rs 1.2 crore to Rs 70 lakh. IndiGo complied with the revised penalty order and made the payment accordingly.
The incident highlighted significant passenger dissatisfaction due to delays caused by adverse weather conditions at Delhi airport. The situation escalated when passengers exited the aircraft and occupied the tarmac area at Mumbai airport.
IndiGo's proactive approach in appealing against the initial penalty resulted in a substantial reduction of the fine. The airline's compliance with regulatory requirements was evident through its timely payment of the revised amount.
The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges airlines face in managing passenger expectations during unforeseen delays. Regulatory bodies like BCAS play a crucial role in ensuring aviation security and enforcing penalties when necessary.
IndiGo's experience underscores the importance of adhering to aviation regulations and promptly addressing any violations. The airline's actions post-incident demonstrate its commitment to resolving issues within the framework of regulatory guidelines.
This case also highlights how regulatory appeals can lead to reconsideration and reduction of penalties, benefiting both airlines and regulatory authorities by ensuring fair enforcement of rules.
