Why Women's Day Is Celebrated On March 8th?

The date was selected in remembrance and honour of an historic event that took place in 1917, when a multitude of women came together on the streets to demand for better rights, fair treatment, and secure & safer working conditions. This was came at a time when society was heavily male centered. That time, majorly women was seen as a household maker and had minimal to nil rights economically. For instance, they had no opportunity to vote or apply for jobs they wished as they were already categorised as per their gender.

Hence, March 8th symbolises women's voices, their resilience and courage to stand for their rights.

Nearly 3 in 4 countries still permit child marriage, cutting short childhoods, education and futures of these girls.

"In nearly 70 per cent of surveyed countries, women face more barriers accessing justice than men," UN said.

International Women's Day History & Significance:

Encouraged by the universal female suffrage movement, International Women's Day was originated from labor movements in Europe and North America in the early 20th century.

The earliest version reported was a "Woman's Day" organized by the Socialist Party of America in New York City on 28 February 1909. In solidarity with them, communist activist and politician Clara Zetkin proposed the celebration of "Working Women's Day", approved at the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference in Copenhagen, albeit with no set date; the following year saw the first demonstrations and commemorations of International Women's Day across Europe. Vladimir Lenin declared 8 March as International Women's Day in 1922 to honour the women's role in the 1917 Russian Revolution; it was subsequently celebrated on that date by the socialist movement and communist countries. The holiday was promoted by the United Nations in 1977, as per Wikipedia.

Overall, the significance of women is to focus on issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.
