IRCTC Aadhaar Update: Exclusive Online Train Ticket Booking Window for Verified Users Starting January 2026

Booking train tickets on IRCTC from the very first day of reservations just became easier for Aadhaar-verified users. From January 12, 2026, passengers whose IRCTC accounts are Aadhaar-authenticated get an exclusive 8 am to 12 midnight online booking window on the opening day of the Advance Reservation Period, aimed at curbing touting and prioritising genuine travellers.

This longer “first-day only” window marks the third phase of a policy that initially restricted agents and non-verified users only for a few minutes. Over recent months, Railways gradually expanded Aadhaar-priority hours, finally stretching them till midnight on the opening day, while keeping counter bookings unchanged. Officials say the move follows evidence that Aadhaar-based controls reduced mass blocking of seats by touts.

IRCTC Aadhaar window: What changes from January 12

On every train’s opening day of ARP, only Aadhaar-authenticated IRCTC users can book general reserved tickets online between 8 am and 12 am. Earlier, this privilege ended at 4 pm; before that, it was limited to noon, and initially just the first fifteen minutes. The updated timing applies on the IRCTC website and mobile app, not at physical counters.

Indian Railways has clarified that the basic reservation rules, including ARP length and offline booking procedures, remain the same. The change is confined to who gets priority during the high-demand first day online. A Railway Board communication said the scope of Aadhaar-authenticated booking is being expanded “upto 0000 hours of the day in a phased manner” to ensure benefits reach genuine passengers.

Why IRCTC is favouring Aadhaar-authenticated users

The exclusive window is designed to limit bulk online bookings by touts and unauthorised agents, especially in popular trains where seats vanish within minutes. Officials point out that similar Aadhaar and agent restrictions for Tatkal bookings significantly reduced misuse. Extending the model to general reservations on ARP day, they argue, helps ordinary passengers access confirmed berths more fairly.

The Financial Express quoted the Railway Board’s letter, which emphasised that Aadhaar authentication helps track suspicious patterns and discourage automated ticket blocking. While authorised agents can still book tickets after the exclusive window ends, they are effectively pushed out of the online system during peak first-day hours, reducing competition for regular users logging in from home or mobile.

How to enable Aadhaar KYC on your IRCTC account

To benefit from the extended window, passengers must complete Aadhaar KYC on IRCTC before booking. After logging into your account, navigate to “My Profile”, choose the Aadhaar KYC option, enter your Aadhaar number, and validate it with OTP sent to the registered mobile. Once authenticated, IRCTC marks the account as Aadhaar-verified, enabling first-day priority access automatically.

IRCTC has clarified that there is no extra charge or separate quota for Aadhaar users; the advantage lies purely in timing. Non-verified users can still book general reserved tickets, but only after the first day’s exclusive window closes, or through PRS counters as usual. For Tatkal, Aadhaar-based OTP verification is already mandatory for online bookings.

Key FAQs: agents, multiple logins, and counters

Authorised agents and non-Aadhaar users cannot book general reserved tickets online during the exclusive window on ARP day; their access resumes after midnight or on later days. However, they face no new restrictions at PRS counters, where timings and procedures are unchanged. The rules target online bookings only, where tout-driven misuse was most visible.

IRCTC’s existing limits on number of tickets per user ID, per month, and simultaneous logins continue to apply. Aadhaar KYC does not relax those caps; instead, it works alongside them to flag abnormal booking behaviour. For genuine passengers, the practical takeaway is straightforward: link Aadhaar once, then use the longer 8 am–midnight window on opening day to improve chances of securing preferred trains and dates.
