Putting an end to all the confusion, both the NSE and BSE have confirmed that January 1 is not a trading holiday for the equity markets. Investors can carry out normal trading activities without any disruption on the first day of the year.

This means the stock market will remain open on Thursday, January 1, 2026, even though it is New Year's Day.
On January 1, 2026, equity, equity derivatives (F&O), and currency derivatives segments on NSE and BSE will function as usual. Since the day does not appear in the official 2026 holiday calendar, trading hours, order placement, and settlements will follow the regular schedule. This makes January 1 a normal working trading day for stock market participants.
First Stock Market Holiday in 2026
The first official stock market holiday in 2026 for equity and derivative segments will be Republic Day on January 26, 2026, which falls on a Monday. On this day, NSE and BSE will remain completely closed, marking the first full trading holiday of the year.
Full NSE Trading Holidays in 2026
In total, NSE will observe 15 full trading holidays in 2026 for equity, equity derivatives, and currency derivatives, excluding weekends. These holidays fall on important national and religious occasions such as Holi, Shri Ram Navami, Mahavir Jayanti, Maharashtra Day, Bakri Id, Muharram, Ganesh Chaturthi, Gandhi Jayanti, Dussehra, Diwali Balipratipada, Guru Nanak Jayanti, and Christmas. On these days, all equity-related trading activities will remain suspended.
Weekend Holidays With No Trading Impact
Several festivals in 2026 fall on weekends and therefore do not affect stock market trading. These include Maha Shivaratri (February 15, Sunday), Id-Ul-Fitr (March 21, Saturday), Independence Day (August 15, Saturday), and Diwali Laxmi Pujan (November 8, Sunday). Since NSE and BSE are already closed on weekends, these dates will not result in additional market holidays.
While equity markets remain open, the commodity segment follows a different schedule. On January 1, 2026, MCX will operate only during the morning session, while the evening session will remain closed. This partial holiday applies only to commodity derivatives, and it does not impact equity, F&O, or currency trading on NSE and BSE.
MCX and NCDEX Special Holiday Timings
On certain holidays like Holi and Muharram, commodity exchanges such as MCX and NCDEX may observe morning session closures with evening sessions remaining open. Traders dealing in commodities are advised to carefully check exchange-wise circulars before placing trades on such days.
