Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently highlighted the global impact of products under the One District One Product (ODOP) scheme. He made these remarks while inaugurating the Khadi Mahotsav 2025 at Lucknow's Indira Gandhi Pratishthan. This week-long festival celebrates the artistic talents of Khadi and handloom artists from all over India, as per an official statement.

Addressing the audience, Adityanath described Khadi as a representation of India's self-respect and self-reliance. He noted that Khadi is more than just a fabric; it embodies India's dignity. The chief minister recalled how Mahatma Gandhi turned Khadi into a movement that played a crucial role in India's freedom struggle. The spinning wheel was not only a source of employment but also an essential part of the national movement.
Khadi's Evolution and Global Recognition
Adityanath discussed Khadi's evolution from manual spinning wheels to modern solar and electric versions, highlighting its ongoing significance today. He praised the success of the ODOP scheme, calling it Uttar Pradesh's pride. Each district's unique product has gained recognition both nationally and internationally.
The chief minister emphasised Uttar Pradesh's effective implementation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Vocal for Local initiative. This initiative empowers the local economy by promoting handicrafts and entrepreneurship. He commended the diverse craftsmanship across districts, particularly in textiles and handicrafts.
Market Access and Employment Generation
Adityanath stressed the state government's efforts to ensure market access for Khadi, clay art, and other indigenous products. He described this as a chain of self-reliance, proudly noting that the Khadi sector alone has generated employment for over 3.5 lakh people in the past seven years.
The chief minister highlighted the growing preference for indigenous products during festivals, replacing foreign goods. In the past, festivals were celebrated with imported items, including hazardous products from China that caused health issues among children. Local products offer a safer alternative while creating job opportunities and contributing to India's economic growth.
A Platform for Artists and Entrepreneurs
Describing the Khadi Mahotsav as a significant platform, Adityanath stated that it provides artists, weavers, and entrepreneurs an opportunity to showcase their skills and learn new techniques. The event promotes Khadi and Village Industries while bringing together artists and entrepreneurs from across India.
The chief minister referred to the growing global demand for Khadi, describing it as a symbol of India's cultural heritage. This demand underscores Khadi's importance not only as a fabric but also as a representation of India's rich cultural legacy.
