The highly anticipated release of Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan in India has been delayed, just days before its planned premiere on January 9, 2026. The hold-up comes amid a pending censor certificate and ongoing legal proceedings, leaving both fans and distributors uncertain about when the film will hit theaters.
Jana Nayagan Release Date: Will Vijay's Film Release on Pongal?
The Madras High Court has temporarily stayed an earlier order directing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to grant a 'UA' certificate for the film. The bench, led by the Chief Justice, has scheduled the next hearing for January 21, following the Pongal court holidays, leaving the release date in limbo.

Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan Release in Limbo: Madras High Court Puts UA Certification on Hold Amid CBFC Dispute
During Friday's proceedings, the court questioned the urgency with which the producers sought relief and whether the CBFC had been given sufficient opportunity to present its side. The judges also examined whether key procedures under the Cinematograph Act were overlooked when a single judge intervened in the certification process.
Senior advocates Mukul Rohatgi and Satish Parasaran, representing the producers, argued that the Examining Committee had already recommended a 'UA' certificate with minor cuts. They questioned why a committee member later raised objections, claiming that such actions undermined the committee's collective recommendation.
The bench, however, expressed concerns over the haste of the appeal, pointing out that no certificate had been officially issued. The judges highlighted that announcing a release date without certification could put unnecessary pressure on the CBFC and noted that the Union of India had not been given adequate time to respond.
On behalf of the CBFC, the Additional Solicitor General told the court that the board had not been given enough time to submit a counter affidavit. It was also noted that a letter from the CBFC chairperson dated January 6 was set aside even though the producers had not directly challenged it.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta emphasised that relief cannot extend to overturning orders that were never under challenge, warning that such an approach could nullify statutory provisions. The CBFC also confirmed that the film had been referred to a Revising Committee before the writ petition was filed.
The legal issue arose after Justice PT Asha raised concerns about the functioning of the Examining Committee. The judge warned that allowing members to reverse their initial certification opinions could set a "dangerous precedent" and compromise the integrity of the certification system.
The Examining Committee had originally recommended a 'UA' certificate with specific cuts, but a complaint regarding religious sentiments and portrayal of the armed forces led the file to be sent to a Revising Committee, triggering the current legal challenge.
Jana Nayagan Cast and Crew
Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth, stars Thalapathy Vijay as a police officer. The cast includes Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Menon, Priyamani, Prakash Raj, Sunil, and Nassar, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander. The film has been announced as Vijay's final project, raising anticipation among fans.
With the interim stay in place, the 'UA' certificate will not be issued until the appeal is heard on January 21. The court will examine whether the single judge overstepped jurisdiction and if the CBFC followed proper procedures under the Cinematograph Act when referring the film to a Revising Committee.
