As Kolkata unveils its groundbreaking under-river Metro service, telecom operators are stepping up to ensure uninterrupted voice and data services for commuters. Dive into the details of this remarkable connectivity feat.
Kolkata, March 6: As the country's first under-river Metro rail service connecting Kolkata and Howrah prepares for its launch, telecom operators have assured uninterrupted voice and data services to commuters throughout the journey. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the East-West Metro corridor on Wednesday, a significant portion of which runs beneath the Hooghly river.

Vi's Network Deployment
Vodafone Idea (Vi) announced the successful completion of its network coverage across the entire underground East-West Metro corridor, including the 520-meter under-river stretch. To ensure a superior network experience, Vi has implemented IBS in-building solutions within the underwater tunnel and the underground Metro tunnel.
Airtel's Network Readiness
Airtel has also confirmed its network readiness for the East-West Metro corridor, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for its customers.
Jio's Network Status
Jio officials were unavailable for comment regarding their network coverage in the underground East-West Metro corridor.
Unique Challenges of the Under-River Tunnel
Vodafone Idea highlighted the unique challenges posed by the under-river tunnel, located 13 meters below the Hooghly riverbed and 33 meters below the surface level. To address these challenges, Vi has deployed advanced network solutions to provide a seamless and superior network experience to its customers.
Underground Stations and Elevated Sections
Of the total 16.6 km East-West Metro corridor, 10.8 km are underground, including the tunnel beneath the river. The underground section comprises six stations: Phool Bagan, Sealdah, Esplanade, Mahakaran, Howrah Station, and Howrah Maidan. The remaining six stations between Salt Lake Stadium and Sector V are elevated.
As the East-West Metro corridor prepares to open its doors to the public, telecom operators have demonstrated their commitment to providing uninterrupted connectivity to commuters throughout the journey. With advanced network solutions in place, passengers can expect a seamless and superior network experience, ensuring smooth communication and access to essential services during their travels.
