Indian Railways Boarding Rules Change 2026

The Indian Railways has changed the boarding station rules from April 1. As per the new rules, train passengers are allowed to change boarding stations up to 30 minutes before the train leaves its origin station.

Earlier, passengers could request a change in boarding stations only before the reservation chart was first prepared.

How Will It Benefit Train Travellers?

A passenger has a reservation for travelling from A station to Z station. Due to some reasons, the passenger has to board train from station B (which is after the previously selected boarding station A). In such cases travellers can change the boarding sation to Station B at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure from the original boarding station.

Indian Railways boarding station rules 2026 apply mainly to journeys originating from major hubs, where passengers often choose between multiple terminals. The rule allows one modification of the boarding point for each ticket, and this must be submitted before the second reservation chart is prepared. The relaxed deadline aims to help passengers who face traffic delays or reach another nearby station earlier.

Who Is Eligible For New Boarding Rules?

Only those train passengers who have a confirmed reservation can use the option. Those with RAC ( Reservation Against Cancellation) tickets can also avail the options. However, waitlisted passengers are not covered under the provisions.

Once the boarding point is changed successfully, the original boarding station becomes invalid for that ticket, but the passenger retains the same seat or berth allotment on the new boarding segment.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw explained the practical benefit of the change on 24 March 2026. Addressing the media, Ashwini Vaishnaw said: "Under the new provision, if a passenger is unable to board from the original station, they can select the next convenient station and board the train without losing their confirmed seat." Officials said this would also help staff manage reserved accommodation more efficiently.
