Boeing, one of the largest aerospace manufacturers globally, has initiated a workforce reduction as part of its previously announced plan to cut approximately 17,000 jobs, according to the Associated Press This latest wave of layoffs affects nearly 400 employees in Washington state and over 500 in California.
The aerospace giant, headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, had earlier revealed plans to trim its workforce by 10% in the coming months. This decision, attributed to "overstaffing," is unrelated to the two-month strike by Boeing machinists, according to CEO Kelly Ortberg. "This was a result of overstaffing," Ortberg stated, dispelling speculations linking the layoffs to labour disputes.

Impact Across Regions and Roles
The layoffs span various roles, including engineers, recruiters, and analysts, affecting Boeing's commercial, defence, and global services divisions. Most of the reductions have occurred in the Puget Sound region, encompassing areas like Seattle, Tukwila, and Kent. The Seattle Times reports that these job cuts are part of the company's broader restructuring plan, initiated in October, which has already impacted 3,500 employees nationwide.
Notices filed with state employment agencies show that Boeing began notifying employees of the layoffs in November, with the latest round expected to take full effect by February 21. To mitigate the impact, Boeing has assured affected employees severance pay, career transition services, and subsidized health insurance benefits for up to three months.
Financial Troubles
Boeing's financial troubles have been mounting since the devastating crashes of its 737 Max jetliner in 2018 and 2019, which claimed 346 lives and severely tarnished its reputation. The company's struggles deepened in January this year when a fuselage panel detached from an Alaska Airlines plane.
The aerospace manufacturer has been grappling with a challenging market environment exacerbated by these incidents, alongside increasing competition and supply chain disruptions. As part of its response, Boeing announced workforce reductions, aiming to align its operational capabilities with current market demands.
Support Measures
While the layoffs mark a difficult phase for the aerospace giant, Boeing has emphasized it's to supporting displaced workers. The company's severance packages and career transition services aim to ease the burden for those affected.
