Luminar Technologies, a provider of lidar sensors for self-driving cars, announced on Friday its decision to reduce its workforce by approximately 20% as part of a strategic restructuring effort for the current year.
The company, which boasted nearly 800 full-time employees across various global locations including the US, Germany, Sweden, India, and China as of December last year, aims to streamline its operations and optimize costs amidst changing market dynamics.

In addition to downsizing personnel, Luminar is exploring options to sub-lease portions or the entirety of some of its facilities, signalling a reduction in its global footprint as part of the restructuring initiative.
This move, slated for immediate implementation, is anticipated to yield significant cost savings, with the company projecting an annual reduction in operating expenses ranging from $50 million to $65 million upon completion by the end of this year.
In April, the company launched its latest lidar sensor, Halo, in collaboration with auto-software maker Applied Intuition. This partnership aims to assist car manufacturers in enhancing the testing of their assisted-driving systems.
Lidar sensors play a crucial role in the development of self-driving vehicles and driver-assistance technologies by providing a detailed three-dimensional map of the surrounding environment.
