In anticipation of the Mahakumbh 2025, a religious gathering held once every 12 years, the Uttar Pradesh Police has prepared a comprehensive security strategy to safeguard the millions of pilgrims expected. The event, which will span from January 13 to February 26, will see over 45 crore devotees converge at Prayagraj, the site of the Sangam, where the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers meet. To manage this influx, the police have implemented an intricate security scheme designed to protect attendees and maintain order.
The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, has called for stringent security measures around Prayagraj, focusing on critical access points. Under his direction, a layered security network comprising 102 checkpoints spread across seven essential routes has been established. This setup aims to scrutinize both individuals and vehicles thoroughly, ensuring a safe passage for all pilgrims. DGP Prashant Kumar highlighted the deployment of around 40,000 police personnel, augmented by experts in cybercrime, to oversee this mammoth task. These teams are supported by cutting-edge technology, including artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance surveillance capabilities.
Advanced Technology for Enhanced Security
To further strengthen security, the Uttar Pradesh Police has introduced a multi-faceted approach that incorporates advanced technological tools. A total of 2,700 AI cameras have been strategically placed around the Kumbh area, providing comprehensive coverage and real-time monitoring. Additionally, 113 underwater drones are deployed to ensure the safety of the waterways. These AI-enabled cameras and drones are integral components of the police's surveillance strategy, designed to safeguard the vast number of pilgrims attending the event.
Robust Surveillance and Preparedness Measures
The security measures put in place for Mahakumbh 2025 are not limited to technological advancements alone. The Uttar Pradesh Police has also arranged for a formidable physical presence, with a dedicated force comprising 71 inspectors, 234 sub-inspectors, and 645 constables stationed across the checkpoints. These personnel are complemented by 113 Home Guards/PRD jawans, all tasked with monitoring the event closely. To enhance their preparedness, the police have conducted mock drills in collaboration with various security agencies, including the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), National Security Guard (NSG), and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC).

In line with the commitment to providing an impenetrable security arrangement, DGP Prashant Kumar stated, "We have created a web of surveillance powered by artificial intelligence to protect and help navigate the sea of humanity at the site." This statement underscores the extensive planning and resources dedicated to ensuring the safety of all participants.
Final Preparations for the Mahakumbh
As the Mahakumbh 2025 approaches, the city of Prayagraj is buzzing with activity. Devotees have started arriving at the Sangam, eager to participate in the holy rituals, including the Shahi Snan on auspicious dates such as January 14 (Makar Sankranti), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya), and February 3 (Basant Panchami). The Kumbh Mela is not just a religious event; it's a cultural phenomenon that attracts millions from around the globe, drawn by faith and the chance to experience this unique gathering.
With the deployment of advanced surveillance technology, including AI cameras and underwater drones, alongside a substantial police force, the Uttar Pradesh Police aims to ensure a safe and secure environment for the millions of pilgrims expected to attend. The meticulous planning and execution of the security arrangements reflect the significance of the Mahakumbh in India's cultural and spiritual landscape.
As Mahakumbh 2025 draws to a close on February 26, the efforts of the Uttar Pradesh Police and other agencies will have ensured that this significant spiritual gathering proceeded smoothly, reaffirming the importance of safety and security at such large-scale events.
