Mahashivratri 2026 will be observed on 15 February, when temples across India will resonate with chants of "Om Namah Shivaya" and special prayers dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Considered one of the most sacred nights in the Hindu calendar, Mahashivratri is believed to be the divine occasion when Lord Shiva performs the cosmic Tandava dance symbolising destruction and renewal.
Many devotees also associate the festival with the celestial wedding of Shiva and Parvati, marking their eternal union.

Maintain purity in thoughts, speech, and actions throughout the day.
Stay awake at night (if possible) and listen to Shiva katha or devotional hymns.

What Not to Do or Don'ts on Mahashivratri
The Puranas and traditional beliefs outline several important restrictions as per Mahashivratri.org:
Devotees should not complete a full circular parikrama around the Shiva Lingam. Instead, they should perform a semi-circle and return to the starting point.
Milk should not be offered in a bronze container; it must be offered in a copper vessel.
Water should not be offered in metal or steel containers; leaves may be used instead.
Wearing black clothes is discouraged, as Lord Shiva is believed not to favour the colour.
Red flowers should be avoided; white flowers are preferred. Ketki and Kevada flowers are strictly avoided due to mythological beliefs that they are cursed.
Steel utensils are generally avoided during rituals. Brass, copper, or silver vessels are considered more appropriate.
Coconut water, vermilion (sindoor), kumkum and tulsi leaves are not offered to Lord Shiva.
Devotees refrain from consuming meat, onion, garlic, tobacco and alcohol.
Mahashivratri 2026 Vrat Niyam: Shivratri Fasting Rules
Fasting is a key element of Mahashivratri observance. However, devotees are encouraged to consider their health conditions before undertaking a strict fast. Those on medication or with medical concerns should consult doctors, as sudden dietary changes may cause health issues.
Generally, devotees avoid regular meals and rely on fruits, milk and vrat-friendly dishes during the observance.
Types of Mahashivratri Fast
Nirjala Vrat on Shivratri: No food and no water for the entire fasting period.
Phalahara Vrat on Shivratri: Fruits, milk and light sattvic items are allowed; suitable for those with health or work limitations.
Samapta Vrat on Shivratri allows Phalahara items along with one proper vrat-compliant meal during the day.
While some devotees observe a complete fast without even drinking water, others consume milk products, fruits and special fasting dishes like sabudana preparations and kheer. It is generally advised to avoid regular meals and maintain discipline throughout the day and night.
