The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is bringing a major change in how students are taught and assessed across India. Under the guidelines of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, CBSE is introducing a new online assessment platform that will completely replace the traditional rote-based evaluation system.

According to a report from News 18, this new system will measure how well students actually understand and apply concepts in real-life situations, helping them develop essential skills such as problem-solving, reasoning, analytical thinking, etc.
CBSE's New Plan: Start of Competency-Based Evaluation
The new CBSE examination pattern will mark the end of the long-standing practice of rote memorisation to pass exams. Instead, it will focus on competency-based learning, where students are assessed on understanding and application rather than memorisation.
As part of this reform, CBSE will treat examinations as a continuous and integral part of education, not just as a final test of memory. The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) clearly recommends that exams should help students grow and learn, not create stress or fear of failure.
All About SAFAL
CBSE is soon expected to roll out a digital assessment system known as SAFAL (Structured Assessment for Learning Analysis) for students of classes 3, 5, and 8 as per data. On the CBSE website
Major objectives of SAFAL include:
- SAFAL will evaluate how well students grasp basic concepts and apply them to solve problems.
- The exam will be conducted through a digital interface.
- Schools will receive detailed reports regarding each student's strengths and weaknesses.
- Teachers will use SAFAL reports to enhance classroom teaching for practical learning instead of memorising textbook answers.
Competency-Based Assessment Framework for Higher Grades
CBSE has already implemented a competency-based assessment framework for classes 6 to 10, focusing on subjects like science, mathematics, and English. This framework covers skill-based understanding, where students are encouraged to think creatively.
The data collected from SAFAL assessments will help schools and teachers track learning progress more accurately. Teachers will be trained to use the assessment data to guide instruction, identify learning gaps early, and communicate effectively with parents.
