Makar Sankranti 2025: Makar Sankranti is a Hindu festival which is widely celebrated in the country. Popularly known as Sankrānti, the festival marks the transition of the sun from the zodiac of Sagittarius to Capricorn. Furthermore, Makar Sankranti is set by the solar cycle and corresponds to the exact time astronomical event of the Sun entering Capricorn and is observed on a day that usually falls on 14 January of the Gregorian calendar, but on 15 January in leap years. Banks: RBI has declared January 14th as a bank holiday in cities like Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gangtok, Guwahati, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Itanagar, Kanpur, and Lucknow.

Schools, Colleges, and Universities: Since Makar Sankranti is widely celebrated in the country, the majority of schools, colleges, and universities will be closed on Tuesday.

Government Offices: Many states would follow January 14th as a public holiday, and hence government offices will be closed.

What Will Be Opened?

Stock Market: Trading will commence as normal on BSE and NSE as the stock exchanges do not observe January 14th as a holiday.

Transportation: The public buses, local trains, metros and other services will be operational, however, they might operate for a shorter time period or have lesser availability of services.

ATM Services: With minimal bank branches operating, services at ATMs will be opened 24X7 for withdrawing, depositing, checking balance, or getting bank statements among others.

Markets And Shopping Malls: These areas will be busy on January 14th as there could be offers or big discounts offered by the malls or markets due to Makar Sankranti.
