This will mark the end of an era for one of the earliest and most iconic communication platforms on the internet. The company is asking all users to shift to Microsoft Teams, which will now be the main app for communication and collaboration.

Skype No Longer Available: Will You Lose Your Data?

After May 5, 2025, Skype will no longer be available for use. However, users will not lose their existing chats or contacts. Microsoft has made it easier for users to switch to Teams. By simply logging in to Microsoft Teams with their existing Skype ID, users can continue to access their full chat history and contact list.

Teams offers all the basic features of Skype like one-on-one and group audio/video calls, messaging, and file sharing. In addition, it comes with extra tools like calendar integration, community channels, and collaboration features, which make it more suitable for both personal and professional use.

New Skype credit and subscription plans are no longer available. But existing paid users can use their services until their current plan ends. Skype Numbers will work until their expiry and can also be moved to other service providers. Even after the shutdown, calls to Skype Numbers can be received via the Skype web portal or through Teams, where users will get notifications.

How to Switch from Skype to Microsoft Teams?

Skype will keep working till May 5, 2025. Microsoft is giving users enough time to shift to Teams. The switch is simple in which users just need to log in to Teams with their Skype account. All previous messages and contacts will appear automatically.

Microsoft says the transition will be smooth and user-friendly. Here is how you can do it:

  • Download the free Microsoft Teams app on your desktop or phone.
  • Log in using your existing Skype username and password.
  • All your previous chats and contacts will appear automatically.
  • Start using Teams for video calls, messaging, and more.

Microsoft Teams is available on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and the web. Microsoft has also added guides and support pages to help users make the shift without trouble. The Teams has features like video and audio calls, messaging, file sharing, and also has extra tools like calendar support and community channels. It already has over 300 million monthly active users worldwide.

What is Skype?

Launched in 2003, Skype was one of the first apps that allowed people to make free video and audio calls over the internet. It became a household name across the world, especially among families, students, and businesses looking for a low-cost way to stay in touch.

Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion. But over the years, its popularity declined as new apps like WhatsApp, Zoom, and Google Meet entered the market with better mobile support, simpler interfaces, and faster features. Microsoft has now decided to focus its attention on Teams, which is better suited to modern communication needs and is already widely used in offices and schools.
