Microsoft has initiated another round of significant layoffs, marking its second major workforce reduction in recent months. Layoff notices were distributed on Wednesday, although the company did not specify the exact number of employees affected. However, it confirmed that less than 4% of its workforce from a year ago would be impacted.

The layoffs will span various global teams, including the sales division and the Xbox gaming unit. "We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace," Microsoft stated. This decision aligns with their strategy to adapt to market demands.
Impact on Workforce
As of June last year, Microsoft had 228,000 full-time employees. The current layoffs are expected to affect nearly 9,000 workers, close to 4% of its workforce. This follows previous job cuts earlier this year, highlighting ongoing adjustments within the company.
In May, Microsoft executed its largest job cuts in over two years by laying off around 6,000 employees. This represented nearly 3% of its global workforce and was driven by substantial investments in artificial intelligence technologies.
Regional Reductions
Additional reductions occurred at Microsoft's Redmond headquarters in June, where 300 employees were let go. This followed the dismissal of nearly 2,000 workers in the Puget Sound area in May, as reported to Washington state employment officials.
The company's strategic focus on AI and other technological advancements has necessitated these workforce adjustments. Despite these challenges, Microsoft remains committed to aligning its resources with evolving market needs.
The tech giant's efforts to streamline operations reflect broader industry trends as companies navigate a rapidly changing technological landscape. These measures aim to enhance Microsoft's competitiveness and ensure long-term success.
