Microsoft is set to invest USD 3 billion, approximately Rs 25,700 crore, to enhance its cloud computing and AI capabilities in India. CEO Satya Nadella announced this at a conference with startup founders and tech executives. The company also aims to train 10 million Indians in AI skills by 2030. This move highlights India's growing importance as a hub for AI innovation.

Nadella's visit follows those of other tech leaders like Nvidia's Jensen Huang and AMD's Lisa Su. India, with its vast pool of programmers and tech service providers like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro, is becoming a key player in the AI sector. Microsoft's investment marks its largest expansion in India to date.
AI Infrastructure and Skilling Initiatives
The company plans to implement its investment and skilling initiatives over the next two years, including setting up new data centres. Currently, Microsoft operates three data centre regions in India and plans to open a fourth by 2026. This expansion underscores India's leadership in AI innovation.
Microsoft offers cloud services under the Azure brand, with over 60 regions globally. In India, it has regions in Central, South, West, and South Central India. The company is also expanding regionally through partnerships like the one with Jio.
Commitment to AI Training
During his last visit in February 2024, Nadella announced the ADVANTAIGE India initiative to provide AI training to 2 million people by 2025. This initiative focuses on smaller cities and rural areas. On Tuesday, he revealed plans to train an additional 10 million Indians by 2030.
The training will involve collaboration with government bodies, non-profits, corporate partners, and local communities. ADVANTAIGE INDIA is part of Microsoft's Global Skills for Social Impact programme.
Engagement with Indian Leadership
Nadella met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday. They discussed India's AI mission, the India stack, and entrepreneurial goals. Nadella shared a picture of their meeting on X (formerly Twitter), expressing excitement about Microsoft's commitment to making India AI-first.
Prime Minister Modi responded positively to Microsoft's ambitious plans for expansion and investment in India. Nadella emphasised the correlation between GDP growth and efficiency levels derived from energy consumption per token per dollar.
Future Prospects
Nadella highlighted Microsoft's mission to empower individuals and organisations in India through technology. He stressed the importance of scaling human capital to leverage technological opportunities. "We are very excited to announce today our commitment...to train 10 million people around AI skills by 2030," he said.
Microsoft continues to invest heavily in expanding its AI infrastructure globally. Last week, it announced plans to invest USD 80 billion in AI data centres this year alone.
In his previous visit, Nadella praised India's developer community for creating innovative solutions that address national challenges and have global applications. He also announced the Code; Without Barriers programme's expansion to India for skilling 75,000 women developers by 2024.
