Motovolt Mobility and Swobbee announce a partnership to set up 200 battery-swapping stations in India, aiming to make electric two-wheeler ownership more affordable.
In a significant move to enhance the affordability and accessibility of electric two-wheelers in India, Motovolt Mobility, a leading electric two-wheeler manufacturer, and Swobbee, a German climate-tech company, have announced a partnership to establish 200 battery-swapping stations across the country.

Addressing Affordability Concerns
The partnership aims to address one of the key challenges in the adoption of electric two-wheelers – the high cost of batteries, which account for approximately 40% of the total vehicle cost. By providing a convenient and cost-effective battery-swapping infrastructure, Motovolt and Swobbee aim to make electric two-wheelers more affordable for consumers, thereby driving the growth of the EV sector in India.
Pilot Stations and Expansion Plans
The initial phase of the partnership will involve the installation of two pilot stations by March 2024, one each in Delhi and Kolkata. These pilot stations will be funded by Motovolt, and their success will determine the future course of the collaboration. If the pilot proves successful, the partners plan to roll out the remaining 198 stations within the next two years, potentially through a joint venture.
Financial Viability and Revenue Generation
Swobbee's CEO and co-founder, Thomas Duscha, expressed confidence in the financial viability of the battery-swapping model. He stated that the charging fees will be based on a per-kilometer usage model and will be at least 15-20% cheaper than conventional charging methods. The long-term vision is to generate over USD 10 million in revenue and achieve profitability within five years. The investment will be funded through a debt-equity mix of 70:30, and discussions are ongoing with domestic and international private banks.
Universal Infrastructure Solutions
Motovolt Mobility's CEO, Tushar Choudhary, highlighted that the battery-swapping stations will be designed as universal infrastructure solutions, capable of integrating various LEV battery types from different manufacturers and accommodating diverse technologies. This will ensure that the stations can cater to a wide range of electric two-wheelers, making them accessible to a larger consumer base.
The partnership between Motovolt Mobility and Swobbee represents a significant step forward in the development of India's electric two-wheeler ecosystem. By addressing affordability concerns and providing a convenient battery-swapping infrastructure, the collaboration has the potential to accelerate the adoption of electric two-wheelers and contribute to the country's transition towards sustainable mobility.
