Muharram and Ashura Importance
Muharram is the first month of the Hijri calendar and is considered the second holiest Islamic month after Ramadan. The 10th day of Muharram, which is also called Ashura, is very significant in Islamic history. It marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, in the Battle of Karbala.
How Is Muharram Observed?
In countries like India, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon, Muharram is observed with major public events and processions.
Shia Muslims observe Ashura through mourning processions and acts of self-harm to honour Imam Hussain's sacrifice. Many Shia families avoid weddings, parties, or entertainment during this time. Additionally, Black clothing is worn as a symbol of mourning throughout the month.
Sunni Muslims commemorate the day by fasting, offering prayers, and performing charitable acts. Special prayers are held, and many people give alms to the poor. Though not mourned in the same way as Shias, Imam Hussain's sacrifice is still remembered with respect.
