The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has begun sourcing electricity through a power exchange for its Receiving Sub-Station (RSS) in Ghaziabad. This initiative aims to reduce operational costs and enhance sustainability. The Ghaziabad RSS serves as the link between the Namo Bharat corridor and the power grid, marking NCRTC's shift towards more economical and cleaner energy solutions for its train operations and station infrastructure.

According to NCRTC, this transition is anticipated to save approximately Rs 1 crore annually from just one drawl point in the first year. The corporation currently consumes about 326 million units of electricity each year, resulting in an energy expenditure of nearly Rs 300 crore. Power costs constitute around 30 to 35 per cent of NCRTC's total operational expenses.
Cost-Effective Energy Solutions
NCRTC has entered into agreements with Power Trading Corporation (PTC) India Ltd and Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Limited (UPPTCL) to facilitate this transition. Electricity obtained through the exchange is expected to be more cost-effective than traditional distribution utilities, offering a financial benefit.
Besides cost savings, NCRTC aims to source at least 15 per cent of its power through green energy annually via the exchange. This move underscores its commitment to sustainable practices. The power exchange model is being implemented in phases, beginning with operational sections of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor.
Phased Implementation
The phased rollout will eventually extend to other drawl points in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi as the corridor becomes fully operational. Currently, 55 km of the corridor with 11 stations is operational, with full commissioning expected later this year.
"The step is expected to help NCRTC save around Rs 1 crore annually from just one drawl point in the first year," stated NCRTC. "Electricity sourced through the exchange is expected to be more economical than conventional distribution utilities, providing a financial advantage," the statement read.
This strategic move by NCRTC not only aims at reducing costs but also aligns with its goal of promoting sustainability by integrating green energy sources into its operations. As the corridor expands, these efforts are set to enhance both financial efficiency and environmental responsibility.
