The Maharashtra State Transport Authority (STA) has granted temporary licences to the parent companies of app-based taxi services Ola, Uber and Rapido for bike taxi operations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. According to officials cited by PTI, the approval has been granted on the condition that the companies submit applications for permanent licences within one month, following full compliance with all provisions outlined in the Maharashtra Bike Taxi Rules 2025.
Bike Taxi Fare Structure Finalised in Maharashtra; Minimum Fare Rs 15 in Mumbai and Other Cities
The STA has finalised a statewide fare structure for bike taxis, introducing a uniform pricing model aligned with the methodology previously used for auto rickshaws and traditional black-and-yellow taxis. As per the new structure, the minimum fare is set at Rs 15 for the first 1.5 kilometres, while the per-kilometre rate beyond this distance is fixed at Rs 10.27.

These fares will be applicable across Maharashtra, not just within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The pricing model, developed using the Khatua Committee formula, aims to maintain consistency across various modes of public transport. The STA plans to review and potentially revise the fares after one year, based on operational data and market feedback to ensure continued fairness and competitiveness.
Bike Taxi Fares Comparison with Existing Public Transport Fares
With a minimum fare of just Rs 15 for the first 1.5 km, bikes and taxis are cheaper than auto rickshaws (Rs 26) and black-and-yellow taxis (Rs 31) in Maharashtra as per PTI report. For those navigating through Mumbai's busy streets or trying to cover the last stretch from a metro or train station, bike taxis offer an unbeatable combination of affordability, speed, and convenience.
The approval was granted during an STA meeting held on August 18, chaired by Transport Secretary Sanjay Sethi. The companies have received provisional licences, allowing them to start bike taxi operations immediately in MMR. However, they must submit applications for permanent licences within one month, as per the Maharashtra Bike Taxi Rules 2025.

Smart-Ride's Application for License Rejected
While three companies received the green light, the STA rejected the application of Smart-Ride, citing non-compliance with the operational and safety standards required for running app-based bike taxi services in the state.
