OpenAI, the entity behind the creation of ChatGPT, recently announced its swift action against the misuse of artificial intelligence in covert operations aimed at the Indian elections. The organization managed to halt deceptive activities within 24 hours of their commencement, effectively preventing any significant increase in audience engagement. This rapid response underscores OpenAI's commitment to ensuring the ethical use of AI technologies.

In a detailed report shared on its official website, OpenAI revealed that STOIC, a political campaign management firm based in Israel, was involved in generating content related to the Indian elections as well as discussions around the Gaza conflict. The content generated since May criticized India's ruling BJP party while showing support for the opposition Congress party. OpenAI's proactive measures led to the banning of a cluster of accounts from Israel engaged in this influence operation, which also targeted audiences in Canada, the United States, and Israel with content in English and Hebrew.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics & Technology, expressed his concerns regarding the situation. He highlighted that it is evident the BJP is being targeted by influence operations and misinformation campaigns, which pose a serious threat to India's democratic integrity. Chandrasekhar called for a thorough investigation into these activities, emphasizing the need for transparency and early disclosure from platforms like OpenAI.
OpenAI has reiterated its dedication to developing AI that is safe and beneficial for broad use. Part of this commitment involves rigorous investigations into suspected covert influence operations (IO) aimed at manipulating public opinion or political outcomes. In its ongoing efforts to combat abuse, OpenAI has disrupted five covert IOs over the past three months, leveraging advanced technology and dedicated teams to identify and neutralize threats.
The disrupted operation, nicknamed Zero Zeno after the founder of stoic philosophy, involved using OpenAI's models to generate articles and comments across various platforms including Instagram, Facebook, X, and associated websites. The content spanned a wide array of topics beyond Indian politics, touching on international issues such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine and criticisms of the Chinese government.
OpenAI's approach to combating misuse encompasses monitoring potential threats and sharing insights on AI abuse with the public and other stakeholders in the AI ecosystem. This collaborative effort aims to enhance transparency around AI-generated content and ensure that AI technologies are used responsibly and ethically.
