Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan engaged in pivotal discussions with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Chief Kristalina Georgieva, focusing on a new loan programme for Pakistan. This dialogue took place during the World Economic Forum (WEF) Special Meeting in Riyadh. Sharif expressed gratitude towards Georgieva for the IMF's support in securing a USD 3 billion standby arrangement (SBA) last year, which is now approaching its conclusion, as reported by Dawn newspaper.

The meeting marked the first interaction between Sharif and Georgieva since Sharif's re-election, with their last encounter being in Paris in June 2023. The IMF Executive Board is slated to convene on Monday to deliberate on the disbursement of the final tranche of USD 1.1 billion under the SBA. Discussions also covered future programmes aimed at sustaining economic growth and consolidating past achievements.
Separately, Prime Minister Sharif addressed global healthcare inequity at a WEF panel discussion titled ‘Redefining Global Health Agenda’. He shared his personal healthcare ordeal from 2003, which led to expensive treatment in New York, highlighting the financial inaccessibility of such healthcare for many in Pakistan. Following his recovery and election as the chief minister of Punjab, his administration established hospitals specialising in kidney, liver diseases, and cancer treatment.
Sharif pointed out that the Covid-19 pandemic has further exposed global health inequities, particularly between the global North and South. He also touched upon the challenges posed by climate change, noting Pakistan's minimal contribution to global emissions yet significant impact from climate-related disasters, such as the devastating floods in 2022.
The premier acknowledged the support from the Bill Gates Foundation in combating polio in Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of international generosity. This visit to Saudi Arabia marks Sharif's second within a month, following an invitation from Saudi Arabia’s Prime Minister and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and WEF Executive Chairman Prof Klaus Schwab.
In addition to his engagement at the WEF, Prime Minister Sharif met with Islamic Development Bank (IDB) President Muhammad Sulaiman Al Jasser. They concurred on hastening the completion of ongoing IDB projects in Pakistan. The meeting underscored a USD 1 billion investment by the IDB during the previous tenure of Sharif's party, PML-N.
Furthermore, during consultations with Saudi federal ministers and officials in Riyadh, Sharif commended the Saudi Investment Fund’s contributions to Pakistan’s development. He emphasized the imperative of diligent work for national progress and prosperity, underscoring a zero-tolerance policy towards complacency.
This series of meetings and discussions underscores Pakistan's proactive engagement with international partners and institutions to address economic challenges and healthcare disparities. It highlights the country's commitment to fostering development and ensuring a sustainable future for its citizens.
