On Monday, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extended the due date to link permanent account number (PAN) with Aadhaar from 31 December 2019 to 31 March 2020.
This is the third time that the CBDT has extended the deadline on linking the two. Earlier, the deadline was revised from 30 September to 31 December 2019.

In a tweet, CBDT said, "The due date for linking of PAN with Aadhaar as specified under sub-section 2 of Section 139AA of the Income-tax Act,1961 has been extended from 31st December, 2019 to 31st March, 2020. Notification no.107 of 2019 dated 30/12/2019 issued by CBDT."
Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act says that every person having PAN as on July 1, 2017, and is eligible to obtain Aadhaar and makes them liable to intimate his Aadhaar number to tax authorities.
The Income Tax Department made it mandatory for taxpayers to link PAN to Aadhaar, especially for those who file ITR, unless specifically exempted.
Some news reports suggest that on failing to link, one's PAN could become invalid past the deadline.
