The government intends to increase the number of Passport Seva Kendras in post offices from 442 to 600 within five years, according to an official statement. This expansion aims to enhance accessibility and convenience for citizens across India.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Department of Posts have renewed their partnership for another five years. This collaboration ensures the continuation of passport services through post offices. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to formalise this agreement.
Expansion Plans for Passport Services
The MoU was signed by Manisha Bansal Badal, General Manager of Business Development Directorate at the Department of Posts, and K J Srinivasa, MEA Joint Secretary PSP & CPO. The agreement focuses on effective management and operational support for Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs).
By 2028-29, the government plans to expand the number of Passport Seva Kendras to 600 nationwide. This initiative aims to increase the annual customer base from 35 lakh to 1 crore over the next five years, providing world-class passport services at local post offices.
Impact on Rural and Underserved Areas
Launched in 2017, POPSKs have already served over 1.52 crore citizens, particularly benefiting rural and underserved areas. This service ensures wider access to passport-related services for people across India.
The renewed agreement between MEA and the Department of Posts highlights a shared commitment to maintaining high-quality passport services. The focus remains on ensuring that citizens can easily access these services at their nearest post office locations.
This strategic expansion reflects the government's dedication to improving public service delivery. By increasing the number of Passport Seva Kendras, more citizens will benefit from convenient access to essential services.
