In a major update, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has made it easier for employees to apply for online withdrawals. Now, there is no need to upload a cancelled cheque or get employer verification, simplifying the process for everyone while applying for online withdrawals.
The move is aimed at fast-tracking the claim settlement process for nearly eight crore EPF members and making the process smoother for both employees and employers.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Ministry of Labour and Employment said that removing these processes would significantly improve the claim procedure and decrease complaints about denied claims.
The ministry in a statement mentioned, "EPFO has completely dispensed with the requirement of uploading an image of a cheque leaf or attested bank passbook while filing online claims. This requirement was initially relaxed on a pilot basis for certain KYC-updated members. Since its launch on 28th May 2024, the move has already benefited 1.7 crore EPF members."
"Following the successful pilot, EPFO has now extended this relaxation to all members. As the bank account holder's name is already verified with the EPF member's details at the time of bank account seeding with the Universal Account Number (UAN), this additional documentation is no longer necessary," the labour ministry stated.
Of the 7.74 crore active EPF contributors, 4.83 crore have already opened UAN-funded bank accounts. Every day, some 36,000 requests are made for bank account seeding, and organisations typically take three days to finish the verification process. However, there was a backlog of pending approvals since employer approval delays were adding an additional 13 days.
What are the key modifications to EPF withdrawal procedure:
- No need to upload your passbook or cancelled cheque
- When submitting online withdrawal claims, members will no longer need to provide a photocopy of their bank passbook or an image of a cheque leaf.
- Bank verification does not require employer approval
- Employer approval is no longer needed to validate bank account information.
Faster Process To Benefit Lakhs of EPF Members
1.7 crore EPF members have already benefited from the changes, which were first implemented as a trial project for specific KYC-updated members on May 28, 2024. EPFO has now extended the relaxation to all members, marking its success.
The labour ministry stated, "Since the bank account is already verified along with the EPF members' details at the time of seeding of bank accounts with the UAN, this additional documentation is no longer necessary."
This action will enable more than 14.95 lakh EPF members to receive the funds more quickly, as their employer permissions for bank verification were still pending. By implementing these modifications, EPFO aims to create a smoother and more effective withdrawal procedure while ensuring the "ease of living" for EPF members and the "ease of doing business" for employers.
The labour ministry added, "Accordingly, with a view to facilitate 'Ease of Doing Business' to the Employers and 'Ease of Living' to the Members, the role of Employer to approve the verification of bank account has now been dispensed with in the seeding process of the member's Bank Account. This will immediately benefit over 14.95 lakh members whose approvals are pending with the Employers."
