New Delhi, June 11 - Senior BJP leader Piyush Goyal embarked on his second term as the head of the Commerce and Industry Ministry on Tuesday, with a clear focus on bolstering India's economic growth. Alongside him, Jitin Prasada took office as the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry. Goyal, who recently secured a victory in the Lok Sabha elections from Mumbai North by a significant margin, reiterated the ministry's dedication to fostering opportunities for the youth and enhancing the welfare of all citizens. The ministers' assumption of their roles comes at a crucial time, marked by challenges in global trade dynamics and a dip in India's export figures.

Upon taking office, Goyal outlined his vision for achieving a developed India by 2047, emphasizing the government's commitment to economic development and stability. This vision aligns with the ministry's goals of creating new job opportunities and ensuring comprehensive welfare measures. The review meeting with senior officials from the commerce department and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) underscored the ministry's strategy to navigate through the complexities of international trade.
The backdrop to Goyal's tenure is characterized by a slight downturn in India's economic indicators. The country witnessed a 3.1% decrease in merchandise exports, totaling USD 437 billion, alongside a 3.5% reduction in foreign direct investments (FDI), which fell to USD 44.42 billion in the fiscal year 2023-24 from USD 46 billion in the previous year. These figures reflect the global economic uncertainties and a reduced demand affecting India's trade and investment flows.
AEPC Chairman Sudhir Sekhri expressed confidence in Goyal's leadership, highlighting the importance of policy stability and continuity at a time when global trade faces numerous challenges. The ministry's proactive approach under Goyal's guidance is seen as pivotal in navigating through these turbulent times and steering India towards sustainable economic growth.
The ministry's immediate focus will be on addressing the current economic headwinds while laying down a robust foundation for long-term growth. With an experienced leadership team at the helm, there is an optimistic outlook towards revitalizing India's trade dynamics and securing a prosperous future for its economy.
