For students across the country to study online, the government is considering a proposal to have one special TV channel per class from class 1 to class 12. These special TV channels will be launched under the government's comprehensive initiative called Pradhan Mantri e-VIDYA or PM e-Vidya.

"On behalf of the students, parents and teachers of the country, I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, for launching Pradhan Mantri e-VIDYA which is a comprehensive e-learning platform," said Union Human Resource Development Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank in a tweet on Sunday.
"Special e-content for visually impaired and hearing impaired children, developed on a digitally accessible information system and learning material for disabled children in sign language has been made available on the NIOS website and YouTube," he added.
Other aspects of the initiative include:
- DIKSHA (One Nation, One Digital Platform): The nation's digital infrastructure for providing quality e-content for school education in States/UTs and QR coded energized textbooks for all grades.
- SWAYAM online courses in MOOCs format for school and higher education.
- Online components in conventional Universities and ODL programmes will also be raised from 20% to 40%.
"To provide enhanced learning opportunities to 3.7 crore students in higher education and expand e-learning by liberalizing open, distance, and online education regulatory framework, the top 100 universities will start online courses," Nishank said.
"The curriculum will be rooted in Indian ethos and integrated with global skill requirements, preparing students and future teachers as per global benchmarks. It will cater to the learning needs of nearly 4 crore children in the age group of 3 to 11 years and ensure that every child in the country will necessarily attain foundational literacy and numeracy in Grade 5 by 2025," he added.
