Quality and safety are fundamental to the company's culture, emphasised Nestle Chairman and Managing Director Suresh Narayanan. Speaking at the Indian Foundation for Quality Management (IFQM) session, he highlighted that business success stems from these principles. He noted that storytelling within the organisation is crucial for maintaining continuity.

During a panel discussion on "Innovative India for Global Reach," Narayanan stated, "There is no Jugaad in quality, either you get it right or you get it wrong. There is no half a house there." He stressed that every meeting, whether business or process-related, starts with a focus on safety, including a review of the safety record.
Focus on Compliance and Safety
Narayanan also underscored the importance of compliance. Reflecting on the Maggi crisis in India, he said, "Quality and safety come to your rescue. It is your kavach. It is your armour." He explained that during the crisis about a decade ago, the company faced significant challenges with Maggi.
He dismissed claims attributing magical powers to him as chairman, stating, "That's all rubbish." Instead, he credited the company's resilience to its strong commitment to quality. This dedication served as a backbone during challenging times.
Emphasising further, Narayanan mentioned that quality and safety are integral to every aspect of the company. They form the foundation of every meeting, ensuring that discussions begin with an assessment of safety records. This approach reinforces their significance in organisational culture.
The outgoing CMD reiterated that these principles are not just about compliance but are essential for long-term success. He believes they act as protective measures in times of crisis, providing stability and trust.
Nestle's focus on these values has been instrumental in navigating past challenges and continues to guide its operations. By prioritising quality and safety, the company aims to maintain its reputation and ensure sustainable growth.
