In a historic ceremony on January 22, Prime Minister Narendra Modi consecrated the magnificent Ram Temple in Ayodhya. The sacred city, rich in cultural and religious heritage, is poised to become a major tourism hub with over $10 billion in investments transforming its infrastructure.
The Jefferies report anticipates a staggering influx of 50 to 100 million visitors annually, drawing parallels between Ayodhya's Ram Temple and iconic global pilgrimage sites like the Vatican City and Mecca. The city's transformation includes revamped railway stations, new airports, townships, and improved roads, signalling a shift in the landscape of religious tourism in India.

Religious tourism, a cornerstone of India's tourism sector, is projected to reach $443 billion by FY33 with an 8% CAGR. The construction of the Ram Temple itself, estimated at $225 million, has been funded through contributions and donations, emphasizing the profound significance of this religious landmark.
Ayodhya, fully aware of the impending surge in pilgrims, has undergone extensive preparations. Currently boasting 17 hotels with 590 rooms, the city has plans for 73 new hotels, with 40 already under construction. Esteemed hotel chains such as Indian Hotels, Marriott International, Wyndham, and OYO Rooms are investing in expanding Ayodhya's hospitality infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of tourists and pilgrims.
The completion of Ayodhya's Phase I airport has marked a milestone in improving connectivity. With a cost of approximately $175 million, the airport has an annual handling capacity of 1 million passengers. The forthcoming international terminal, expected to be operational by 2025, will further boost Ayodhya's accessibility, with Phase II projected to handle around 6 million passengers annually.
While Ayodhya gears up for a tourism boom, India as a whole is working towards enhancing its tourism sector. Despite India's current position, lagging behind in tourism contribution to GDP at 6.8%, the Union Budget of 2023-24 allocated Rs 2,400 crore to boost the tourism sector. Initiatives like the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, PRASHAD Scheme, and Adarsh Smarak Scheme are actively promoting integrated development, pilgrimage sites, and monument revitalization.
Beyond religious tourism, India is experiencing a surge in medical tourism, as noted in the report. Leading healthcare facilities, including Apollo Hospitals, Max Healthcare, Fortis Healthcare, and Medanta, are expected to benefit from the influx of international patients seeking specialized medical treatments. Government initiatives like "Heal in India" and the allowance of 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the wellness and medical tourism segment are further fueling the growth of this sector.
Ayodhya's transformation into a tourism powerhouse, fueled by the consecration of the Ram Temple, is indicative of India's broader push towards economic development through tourism.
