What is Garia Puja?
Garia Puja is one of the important festivals of Tripura, which is celebrated every year on the seventh day of the month of Baisakh. Across the state, the Puja is celebrated with enthusiasm, rituals, and devotion. Widespread excitement surrounds the festivities, from big cities to small towns, and community involvement heightens the festival's splendour.
When and How is Garia Puja Celebrated? Significance of Garia Puja in Tripura
Tripura's Garia Puja begins on the last day of the month of Chaitra and concludes on the seventh day of Baisakh. During this period, devotees gather in temples to worship an idol of Baba Garia, traditionally crafted from bamboo. At the heart of the celebration stands a bamboo pole, beautifully decorated with flowers and garlands, symbolising Lord Garia, the deity of wealth, prosperity, and livestock. Rice, wine, earthen pots, thread cloth etc. are used in the Puja. People sing traditional songs and dance with drums. Devotees pray to Garia Baba for good crop yield. It is also a symbol of prosperity and happiness.
This vibrant festival is known by various names across different communities, including Sangrain, Buisu, Bihu, Busy, and Boisabi.
