RPG Enterprises Chairman Harsh Goenka emphasised the need for genuine change in workplace culture rather than mere condolences. He urged India Inc to establish clear work-life boundaries and hold leaders accountable for toxic environments. This call to action follows the tragic death of a 26-year-old chartered accountant at Ernst & Young, allegedly due to extreme work pressure.

Goenka outlined six urgent measures for India Inc to adopt, aiming to create a healthier workplace. He advocated for mental health programmes, manageable workloads, and wellness initiatives to prioritise employee well-being. Additionally, he suggested offering mentorship to new hires to help them adjust to their roles and environments effectively.
Promoting Work-Life Balance
To combat burnout, Goenka urged companies to stop glorifying overwork and instead reward efficiency. He stressed the importance of setting clear boundaries between work and personal time, ensuring that employee well-being is respected. "Real change, not condolences, is what's needed," Goenka remarked.
He also highlighted the necessity of fostering open communication within organisations. Employees should feel comfortable addressing concerns without fear of retaliation. This approach encourages a more supportive and transparent work environment.
Accountable Leadership
Goenka insisted on holding leaders responsible for creating toxic work environments. By doing so, companies can ensure that leadership is accountable for maintaining a healthy workplace culture. This responsibility is crucial in preventing situations like the one that led to Anna Sebastian Perayil's untimely death.
Anna Sebastian Perayil had passed her CA exams in 2023 and worked at EY's Pune office for four months before her passing. Her mother recently wrote to EY India chairman Rajiv Memani, highlighting the glorification of overwork at the firm.
Government Investigation
The Ministry of Labour & Employment announced an investigation into the alleged unsafe and exploitative work environment at Ernst & Young. This inquiry aims to address concerns about excessive work pressure and its impact on employees' health and well-being.
The focus on mental health programmes, manageable workloads, and mentorship reflects a broader effort to prioritise employee welfare. By implementing these changes, companies can create a more balanced and supportive workplace culture.
