Samsung India Accepts Most Worker Demands Amid Ongoing Strike in Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Nadu government announced that Samsung India Electronics has agreed to most of the workers' demands following a strike that began on September 9. Authorities have urged employees to return to work promptly. However, the demand for union registration, supported by the CPIM-affiliated Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), remains unresolved.

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin explained that Samsung, being a multinational company, has its own policies. The main issue is the registration of the workers' union, which Samsung opposes due to its political affiliation. Discussions are ongoing to resolve this matter.

Union Registration Dispute

Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu stated that the issue is currently in court because Samsung objects to any union with political ties. CITU approached the court on September 30, and as the matter is sub judice, further discussion is restricted. The labour department will act according to the court's decision.

In response to the ongoing situation, Samsung has agreed to provide additional benefits to its employees. Starting in October, workers will receive an extra Rs 5,000 monthly as a special incentive. In case of an employee's death while on duty, a relief amount of Rs 1 lakh will be provided.

Employee Benefits and Legal Proceedings

Samsung also plans to transport employees in air-conditioned buses and allow them leave for family events beyond the existing holidays. Meanwhile, CITU office-bearer E Muthukumar filed a writ plea in the Madras High Court alleging wrongful detention and illegal arrest of seven individuals related to the strike.

The Additional Public Prosecutor clarified that those detained were not held illegally and were released after appearing before a magistrate. An FIR was filed due to law and order concerns involving 36 people; eight were arrested on October 8 but later released by a judicial magistrate.

Industrial Dispute Resolution Efforts

The high court confirmed that employees have been permitted to strike peacefully and dismissed claims of illegal custody. Thennarasu mentioned that police did not arrest anyone; instead, district authorities acted appropriately when protests occurred without police permission.

Samsung's facility in Sunguvarchatram, near Sriperumbudur, manufactures consumer durables like refrigerators and televisions. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Tamil Nadu called for a swift resolution to the industrial dispute to maintain economic momentum and the state's positive image.

CII Tamil Nadu State Council Chairman Srivats Ram emphasised the state's role in attracting foreign direct investments through proactive policies and ease of doing business measures. He praised the government's efforts in fostering a supportive environment for industrial growth and job creation across various sectors.
