Union telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has reportedly urged telecom industry leaders to focus on nine key areas, including universal connectivity, over the next six months. This directive was given during a meeting with prominent figures from the telecom sector at the India Mobile Congress.

The meeting saw participation from Bharti Airtel's MD and CEO Gopal Vittal, Reliance Jio's managing director Pankaj Pawar, Vodafone Idea CEO Akshay Moondra, Qualcomm's senior vice president and President of Qualcomm India Savi Soin, Mediatek Country Head Anku Jain, and COAI Director General SP Kocchar.
Priority Areas for Telecom Industry
An industry source revealed that the minister has requested the formation of a task force to address these priority areas. The focus includes ensuring connectivity for all within six months, enhancing fibre-to-home connections, securing telecom networks, and preventing fraud.
Additionally, the minister emphasised the importance of establishing telecom manufacturing zones and data centres. The push towards green energy solutions was also highlighted as a significant area of focus for the industry.
Industry Concerns and Responses
Interestingly, none of the participants in the meeting raised concerns about issues like adjusted gross revenue burdens or the ongoing satellite spectrum allocation process. These topics were notably absent from discussions despite their relevance to the industry.
A query sent to the minister's office regarding these discussions did not receive a response. This lack of feedback leaves some questions unanswered about how these priorities will be implemented and monitored.
The minister's initiative aims to drive significant improvements in India's telecom sector by addressing these critical areas. The industry's response and action on these priorities will be crucial in achieving the set goals within the stipulated timeframe.
