In a mixed day of trading on the Indian stock market, the Sensex and Nifty 50 closed with minor gains, rising 33 points to 64,976 and 37 points to 19,444, respectively. The Midcap Index, on the other hand, surged by a notable 1%, reaching 40,447 points. The Nifty Bank, however, couldn't keep up and closed in the red, falling 79 points to 43,659.
The stock market today was characterized by various sectors making notable moves, impacting the broader indices.

Reliance Industries (RIL), Infosys, and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) provided a substantial boost to the Nifty. These stocks showcased positive momentum throughout the trading session. Oil marketing companies extended their gaining streak, thanks to positive brokerage notes. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) led the charge, surging by 7%.
The pharmaceutical sector witnessed a second straight session of healthy gains, driven by strong Q2 performances. Zydus Life and Alkem Labs reported earnings that exceeded estimates, propelling their stocks up by 5% each. Cummins India saw a 4% rise as the company retained its double-digit revenue growth guidance, instilling confidence in investors.
Apollo Tyres reported strong Q2 results, leading to a 2-7% increase in the stock prices of various tyre companies. Paint stocks, including Asian Paints and Berger, rose by 2% each, tracking a fall in crude oil prices.
Banks, underperformed, closing in the red. ICICI Bank was one of the draggers in this sector. Bharat Forge, which showed signs of recovery in the previous session, couldn't hold on to the gains and closed with a 2% cut. Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) saw a 3% decline as it prepared to announce its earnings.
Despite the mixed performance of different sectors, the overall market breadth remained in favour of advances, with the NSE advance-decline ratio standing at 1:1. The midcap index, with its significant 1% gain, demonstrated strength and resilience in the market. Investors and traders will be closely watching for further developments in the coming sessions to gauge the market's direction.
