Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that his coalition, Mahayuti, is prepared for both political and infrastructural challenges. This statement followed the successful landing of an Indian Air Force aircraft at the under-construction Navi Mumbai airport. The state is gearing up for upcoming elections, and Shinde's comments come after the BJP's victory in Haryana, suggesting a similar strategy for Maharashtra.

The trial landing of an IAF C295 aircraft at Navi Mumbai International Airport marked a significant milestone. The transport carrier touched down on runway 26 at 12:14 pm, followed by a Sukhoi-30 fighter jet flypast and a water cannon salute. This event signifies progress towards the airport's commercial operations, expected to begin by March 31, 2025.
Navi Mumbai Airport Development
The Adani Group is developing the Navi Mumbai airport, which will be a major aviation hub in India. Chief Minister Shinde highlighted that this new facility would alleviate congestion at Mumbai's existing airport. The construction of the Atal Setu bridge has improved connectivity between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, enhancing access to the new airport.
Shinde's government aims to showcase its achievements over the past two years compared to the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) administration. He urged voters to evaluate the performance of Prime Minister Modi's government over the last decade. Shinde also criticised the opposition for spreading misinformation about welfare schemes like Ladki Bahin, which provides financial aid to women.
Political Tensions and Criticisms
The opposition MVA criticised the Mahayuti government for staging what they called an election stunt with the aircraft landing event. Shiv Sena UBT leader Aaditya Thackeray questioned the necessity of landing an aircraft when the terminal was incomplete. He also raised concerns about naming the airport after activist D B Patil.
NCP SP spokesperson Clyde Crasto accused the BJP-led government of using the unfinished airport for political gain. Meanwhile, Shinde defended police actions in a recent crime case in Badlapur town, where an accused was killed in self-defence during a police encounter. He condemned the opposition for their inconsistent stance on law enforcement actions.
The state cabinet recently proposed increasing the income limit for non-creamy layer status from Rs 8 lakh to Rs 15 lakh annually. Thackeray alleged that Shinde and BJP were inciting conflicts among communities. The successful IAF aircraft landing tested various systems at the airport, ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards.
Infrastructure and Future Prospects
Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL), a special purpose vehicle set up for this Rs 18,000-crore project, is responsible for its execution. Adani Group holds a 74% stake in NMIAL, while CIDCO owns 26%. The recent touchdown allows experts to assess infrastructure readiness as development nears completion.
Jeet Adani of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd expressed pride in NMIAL's progress as their first greenfield project. He stated that this world-class facility would significantly contribute to regional growth and serve as a vital hub for global travellers. The airport will handle both domestic and international flights with its modern infrastructure.
The new airport features a 3,700-metre runway suitable for large commercial planes, advanced passenger terminals, and state-of-the-art air traffic control systems. As development progresses, these facilities are expected to enhance travel experiences and boost economic growth in the region.
