SML Isuzu has ventured into the electric vehicle sector by introducing the Hiroi.ev platform for commercial buses. These buses are anticipated to be available between April and June this year, according to a senior company official. Despite the ongoing prevalence of diesel, petrol, and CNG vehicles, the company believes that government sustainability initiatives will boost demand for electric buses and reduce production costs through increased volumes.

The Hiroi.ev platform is designed for both intra-city and inter-city transport, but the initial focus will be on intra-city projects. "India is one of the most promising markets in the world. Indian government plans for 30 per cent EV penetration in total sales by 2030 will provide us strong support for growth in EV buses," stated Junya Yamanishi, SML Isuzu's MD and CEO, at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo.
Government Procurement Focus
SML Isuzu is primarily targeting government procurement for its electric buses, especially within cities. The Hiroi.ev buses can be fully charged in 2-3 hours and have a range of approximately 200 kilometres per charge, explained Prashant Kumar, Chief General Manager for marketing at SML Isuzu. The commercial launch of Hiroi.ev is expected in the first quarter of the financial year 2025.
The pricing details for these electric buses will be finalised closer to their launch date. Kumar mentioned that since they are focusing on government projects, the pricing strategy for Hiroi.ev will be highly competitive. This approach aims to align with government budgets and encourage widespread adoption.
Additional Vehicle Launches
In addition to the electric bus, SML Isuzu, previously known as Swaraj Mazda, has introduced four more vehicles. These include the AASAI MX - a 12+1 Maxi-Cab segment bus designed for city transport, and the Premium Hiroi Bus with a 3430 wheelbase tailored for staff shuttles and tours. This bus offers features like pushback seats, ambient lighting, USB ports, and onboard entertainment.
The company also launched a multi-stretcher ambulance named AIS-125 D-Type Ambulance and the Samrat XT Plus Tipper Truck. These additions reflect SML Isuzu's commitment to diversifying its product range while addressing various transportation needs across different sectors.
SML Isuzu sees India as a key market due to its ambitious EV goals. The company's readiness to implement new technology aligns with India's target of achieving 30% EV sales by 2030. This strategic move is expected to bolster their presence in the growing electric vehicle market while supporting national sustainability objectives.
