At the Ambassadors Roundtable Meet, Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal urged global partners to invest in India's USD 1 trillion maritime roadmap, emphasising opportunities for collaboration in ports and logistics.
Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has called on international partners to consider India as a key destination for investment and innovation. He highlighted the government's ambitious USD 1 trillion maritime investment plan during the Ambassadors Roundtable Meet. This event, organised by the Shipping Ministry, serves as a precursor to the upcoming India Maritime Week (IMW) 2025, which will take place in Mumbai next month.

The minister emphasised India's evolving maritime sector, noting its transformation into a more resilient and sustainable ecosystem. "Our ports, shipping, and logistics are becoming future-ready," he stated. Sonowal also pointed out that this transformation presents significant opportunities for international collaboration and investment in various areas such as port development, cargo terminal operations, and sustainable shipping solutions.
Investment Opportunities in India's Maritime Sector
Sonowal outlined a USD 1 trillion investment roadmap for India's maritime sector. This plan includes potential joint ventures in developing ports, multi-modal terminals, shipbuilding, ship recycling, and green hydrogen hubs. The minister stressed the strategic importance of these initiatives in enhancing trade and fostering global connectivity.
The Roundtable was attended by ambassadors and high commissioners from over 25 countries. Senior officials, industry leaders, and representatives from multilateral institutions also participated. The event was chaired by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal himself. He reiterated the government's commitment to making the maritime sector a driver of economic growth and sustainability.
India Maritime Week 2025: A Platform for Global Engagement
A detailed presentation by R Laxmanan, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), provided insights into the agenda for India Maritime Week 2025. The presentation highlighted emerging opportunities for international cooperation and private sector participation. It also focused on innovation-led growth within the maritime industry.
"The power of water is empowering global society to grow in many aspects of human civilisation," Sonowal remarked. He urged exploration of water resources without harming ecology and environment. The minister emphasised the need for a sustainable world with better climate conditions for future generations.
India Maritime Week is a biennial flagship event organised by the ministry. It brings together national and international policymakers, investors, and thought leaders to discuss the future of Indian ports and logistics. The 2025 edition aims to highlight India's journey towards maritime excellence through people-centric infrastructure and a forward-looking vision.
Summarising the discussions at the Roundtable, Sonowal stated that initiatives under India Maritime Week 2025 will position India as a global maritime hub. These efforts aim to foster deeper engagement with international partners while promoting innovation and sustainability in the maritime sector.
