Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal recently evaluated the progress of the northeast's inaugural ship repair facility at Pandu Multi Modal Terminal in Assam. This facility is being developed by Hooghly-Cochin Shipyard Limited with an investment of Rs 208 crore. Additionally, Sonowal reviewed an elevated road corridor project aimed at enhancing connectivity to the Pandu Port Complex.

Investment and Development Projects
The alternative road to NH27, which aims to improve last-mile connectivity to Pandu Port, involves an investment of Rs 180 crore. Sonowal also engaged with senior officials from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) to discuss ongoing projects along the Brahmaputra National Waterways 2. These projects are being developed with a substantial investment of Rs 645 crore.
Pandu holds strategic importance for the northeast's waterways, making it a key location for development. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stones for the region's first ship repair facility here, highlighting its significance. The Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister emphasised this strategic advantage during his visit.
Tourism and Water Sports Initiatives
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is also focusing on river tourism and water sports along the Brahmaputra. As part of this initiative, seven tourist jetties will be constructed at various locations including Oriumghat, Bhupen Hazarika Setu, and Uzanbazar in Guwahati. These developments aim to boost tourism in the region.
In Assam alone, projects worth over Rs 760 crore are currently underway. This significant investment underscores the government's commitment to advancing the region's infrastructure and economic growth. The ongoing projects reflect a broader strategy to enhance connectivity and promote sustainable development in the northeast.
The comprehensive approach to developing waterways and infrastructure in Assam highlights the government's dedication to regional progress. By investing in strategic projects like ship repair facilities and tourism infrastructure, the government aims to unlock new opportunities for economic growth and connectivity in the northeast.
