Tata Steel's Ferro Alloys Division Leads India with First Environmental Product Declaration for Ferrochrome

Tata Steel's Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division (FAMD) has announced a significant milestone in the ferrochrome sector by publishing its Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). This declaration, a Type III eco-label, offers transparent, third-party verified data on the environmental impact of ferrochrome through a comprehensive lifecycle assessment. This initiative aligns with Tata Steel's commitment to sustainable business practices.

Tata Steel Publishes First EPD for Ferrochrome

Ferrochrome is essential for stainless steel production and is widely used in various industries. The EPD provides detailed insights into its environmental performance, enabling customers to make informed choices. Tata Steel aims to support green building projects, as EPDs are increasingly necessary for earning credit points in green certifications within the construction industry.

Environmental Impact Assessment

The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for the ferrochrome EPD was conducted internally by Tata Steel's corporate sustainability team. This study adheres to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards, ensuring a thorough evaluation of the product's environmental impact from raw material extraction to manufacturing. The EPD is registered with the International EPD System and is publicly accessible.

Pankaj Satija, Executive-In-Charge of FAMD, stated, "Sustainability lies at the heart of everything we do at Tata Steel. Our latest EPD for ferrochrome represents our unstinted commitment to environmental transparency and leadership in the industry. By enabling our customers to access independently verified environmental data based on life cycle assessment studies on the product, we help them make responsible choices, further enhancing our position as a trusted partner in sustainable development."

Future Sustainability Goals

Tata Steel plans to expand its range of eco-labelled products, including GreenPro and EPD certifications across various product lines. This strategy aligns with their mission to lead in sustainable practices and cater to environmentally conscious customers. The company has already achieved GreenPro certification for several products, showcasing its leadership in sustainability.

Publishing the EPD is part of Tata Steel's broader strategy to offer sustainable solutions while meeting global environmental standards. By providing detailed insights into ferrochrome's environmental performance, Tata Steel helps customers make informed and sustainable choices.
